How to Teach Down

A down is more than a trick. A dog who can lie down on cue has an easy, comfortable position to hold while you have coffee, talk to a neighbor, or wait at the vet. It builds directly on a reliable sit and the reward-based basics.

Why down is so useful

Down is a settling position. Most dogs find it easier to stay calm lying down than sitting, which makes it the foundation for a settle on cue and a comfortable stay. It is one of the most practical things you can teach.

Teaching the down

Work through the steps below. As always, your timing is what makes it click: mark the instant the elbows reach the floor. Keep sessions short and upbeat.

If your dog pops back up

Some dogs spring straight back up after lying down. Feed a few treats in a row while they are still down to teach that staying down is what pays. If luring to the floor is not working, try luring under a low stool or your bent knee so your dog has to lower all the way down to follow the treat.

Fade the lure and build it out

As with every skill, fade the food lure early so your dog responds to the cue rather than a visible treat. Then make it reliable by proofing against distractions and generalizing to new places. A solid down even helps a reactive dog have a calm, default thing to do.

Keep it gentle

Never push or force your dog into a down. It is uncomfortable and erodes trust. Let your dog choose the movement and pay them generously for it. Soft training treats make luring a down easy.

Step by step

  1. Start from a sit

With your dog sitting, hold a treat at their nose and slowly lower it straight to the floor between their front paws.

  2. Draw it out

Slide the treat slightly away from them along the floor so they follow it down into a lying position.

  3. Mark and reward

The moment the elbows touch the floor, mark and give the treat while your dog is still down.

  4. Add the cue and fade the lure

Once the motion is smooth, say down just before luring, then fade to an empty-hand motion and reward from the other hand.
