A long line is one of the highest-value pieces of gear for a reactive dog. It gives
your dog freedom to move and sniff while you keep them safe and maintain
distance from triggers. It is the
backbone of a good decompression walk and a
quiet hero of the reactive dog playbook.
How we chose
We looked for comfortable handling, secure hardware, and a length that suits real
use rather than a number that sounds impressive. Everything pairs with a
well-fitted front-clip harness,
never a collar, so a sudden stop never jolts your dog’s neck.
Length is a trade-off
More length means more freedom and more line to manage. Fifteen feet handles most
situations, while thirty feet shines in open fields for
parallel walking and
calm introductions. Pick the shortest
line that gives your dog the freedom they need in your usual spots.
Use it safely
Always attach a long line to a harness, never a collar. Keep it from wrapping
around legs, and choose open, low-traffic places
where a bit of slack will not put your dog near a road. Used well, a long line
gives back some of the freedom an everyday leash takes away.
Round out the kit
A long line works best alongside the rest of a sensible setup, which we gather in
our reactive-dog management gear starter kit. A long line is also where you safely build a reliable recall.
